Over the counter cough and cold medicines

There are many products available to help people get through the seemingly endless string of respiratory infections out there. Trying to figure out which treatment is best is confusing because there are so many different medicines and combinations.

While there are many name brand and generics, below is a list of the true chemical names and what they are designed to do. As you shop, you can use this as a guide:

  1. Guaifenesin – expectorant – loosens up secretions. Makes it easier to get mucus out.
  2. Dextromethorphan (DMX, “Tussin”)- cough suppressor
  3. Pseudoephredrine(Sudafed) – decongestant. Dries out mucus membranes. Can relieve sinus pressure and help with nasal drip. Note: this is not recommended for people who have high blood pressure, heart issues or glaucoma.
  4. Phenylephrine – similar to pseudoephredrine. Comes in a nose spray (Afrin)
  5. Chlorphenirmane – antihistamine. Helps dry out mucus membranes. Helps itchy eyes. Helps with sneezing. Very sedating.
  6. Doxylamine, Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) – similar to Chlorpheniramine
  7. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) – pain reliever, fever reducer
  8. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) – pain reliever, fever reducer
