Female sexual medicines

Almost everyone has heard of Viagra for male sexual dysfunction, but most people are not aware that female sexual health medicines also exist:

  1. Filbanserin (Addyi) – FDA-approved for hypoactive (low) sexual desire disorder. This is not a hormone. It works on neurotransmitters in the brain. It is a daily pill. People who take it need to avoid alcohol.
  2. Bremelanotide (Vylessi) – Self-administered Injection medicine that is used as needed. About 1 hour before sex.
  3. Fezolinetant (Veozah) – It is not usually prescribed for sexual issues. It is a non-hormonal oral medicine designed to relieve post-menopausal hot flashes. However, many users have reported an overall feeling of wellness. They also notice increased interest and enjoyment in sex. This benefit may be a byproduct resultant from better sleep and less sweating.

A few important notes: Sildanefil (Viagra) is FDA-approved for use in women. Studies and patient reports suggest that its benefit is mixed.

Hormone replacement therapy (including estrogen, testosterone and others) is widely used and can be very helpful as well. These medicines are only available by prescription. They have some potential significant side effects if not used properly.

The options for female sexual health medicines have increased recently. Thus it is VERY important to discuss your options with your doctor. If you do not find the guidance you seek, ask them for a referral to a colleague. Do this rather than relying on social media. Generally over-the-counter “booster” medicines don’t help.

Also important to note, there are many medicines that can cause sexual dysfunction, including those for blood pressure and mental health. Make sure you discuss this with your doctor in case possible changes can be made.
