Hepatitis A – Hepatitis A is a viral illness that can infect the liver. Hep A can come from contact with unsafe water, raw sewage and by eating food that has the virus in it. It is very commonly found in other countries, so travelers can be exposed. Hep A is often responsible for the “bad clam” people get at picnics. It is a two shot series that usually gives lifetime immunity
Hepatitis B – a blood borne virus that people can get from sexual, blood or other body fluids exposure. The vaccine is a three shot series that usually gives lifetime immunity, also. The first dose is best give within 48 hours of birth.
Both of these vaccines are now part of the pediatric series of shots. So, many people have already been vaccinated. However, if you are traveling or might be exposed (by working in healthcare) ask your doctor if you should be vaccinated.
There is a combination shot that gives Hepatitis A and B protection.

Note: Hepatitis C is another blood virus that infects the liver. However, there is no vaccine available yet.
